![]() ![]() Build your own Linux distribution the easy way. Many people want to create their own Linux distro, perhaps for fun, perhaps to help them learn more about Linux, or perhaps because they have serious neds to solve. But the secret is this: it doesn't need to be hard to get the perfect distro for you. In fact, we've put together several ways that everyone - yes, even you - can make your own perfectly customised distro that suits your individual needs, applying as many or as few changes as you want - it's your Linux, your way. Mainstream Linux distro developers have to make decisions that affect thousands of potential users. Should they include or remove a particular package? Should they apply a patch that may break compatibility with older machines? These matters are discussed fiercely in forums where trolls growl, flames burn and project leaders defend their decisions against an onslaught of dissidents. But as an individual you have none of these issues. ![]()
Or not, Mac updates are Free, And generally OS updates are considerably cheeper than Windows ones. News from the Modula-2 World. 09/02/2017 Back in an entry from 02/26/2017 I asked for available information on Modula-2 systems used in former Eastern Germany. You can install and remove packages as and when you want to, and you can choose whether to install free or non- free software on your system. Why should you have to live with community decisions when you can make Linux work your way? However, the distribution you install will likely contain drivers and components that you don't really want or need on your system. Not only that, the software you always install on every new system has to be downloaded and installed separately each time, which is time- consuming and inconvenient. That's where we come in. If you spend more time programming than you do playing games, you could replace the game packages with your favourite IDE. Or why not remove drivers for hardware you'll never need and save disk space? Those of you who found useful speed increases in our guide to making Linux faster could even apply those tweaks automatically from the install stage. We've talked about how to build your own Linux distro from scratch before, but this time we're more interested in how to respin existing distros in various ways to get the end results you want, starting with the very easiest and ending with the hardest. Sound good? Let's go! Ubuntu Customisation Kit. Difficulty: easy; Time required: 3. Customisation: low. If you're fed up with installing the same components each time you install Ubuntu, you'll find this is by far the easiest way to customise your install CD to include those packages. . You'll need 5. GB spare space on your hard drive, an Ubuntu install ISO and Ubuntu Customisation Kit installed from your package manager.Once you have these resources available to you, simply launch UCK and follow the on- screen instructions. You'll find that most of the usual steps you would have had to take in the past to edit your live CD are all automated. Add this to the intuitiveness of the GUI and it's easy to see that anyone with the inclination can customise their copy of Ubuntu quickly and easily. You can edit Ubuntu as much or as little as you like (see boxout) but you'll be the one calling the shots. A common pitfall within the UCK setup is to miss the dialog that enables you to change which packages are included or omitted by default, with the result you wind up with a standard Ubuntu install disc with a custom name, which isn't overly useful! To ensure you gain access to Synaptic, answer 'Yes' when you're asked whether you want to customise the CD manually during building. This will give you a dialog that offers to open Synaptic or a terminal, or continue the installation. Decisions, decisions. In our example (cunningly called Bob. Buntu) we installed the Medibuntu repository (see our tutorial on installing third- party software in Ubuntu for more insight on this) by opening the terminal from the dialog, and ran the following command. You can then install the GPG key for the repository by typing. This third- party repository gives us access to all kinds of non- free software such as Adobe Reader, Skype and codecs for restricted media formats. Firing up Synaptic from the dialog should now show Skype packages available when you search for it (you may need to reload the list of packages). In Bob. Buntu we also stripped out Open. Office. org and replaced it with Abi. Word and Gnumeric, then removed Ekiga and replaced Firefox with Epiphany. You can include your own choice of software from a Launchpad PPA and any third- party repositories, or remove packages you rarely use simply by checking and unchecking boxes. You have free reign over your choice of packages to include or dismiss with Synaptic. Once you have committed your changes by clicking on Apply you can then proceed to the build stage, which will produce your live CD image in the ~/tmp/remaster- new- files/ directory as lived. When the build is complete you can burn this to CD or try the image out in a package such as Virtual. Box to try your own personalised Ubuntu respin. Ubuntu Customisation Kit has an excellent array of features. You can easily select packages, desktops and locales for instance, and you can also include Wubi if you're distributing your respin to Windows users. However, UCK does lack a few of the features that make the other tools and services worth considering. For example, you can't define the look and feel of your Ubuntu respin without extensive terminal wizardry, and you can't create a boot image for a live USB (though you can do this from your new live environment). You're also bound to Ubuntu as your host system and an Ubuntu variant as your final product, but despite these shortcomings UCK is a great introduction to distro development and is the ideal tool for those of you who simply want a copy of Ubuntu that installs and runs your favourite working environment from the outset. Ubuntu variants. Ubuntu is renowned for being easy to customise, and for this reason you'll see ridiculous numbers of variants dotted around the internet such as n. Ubuntu Xubuntu, and even a Satanic edition. Some of these variants contain specific enhancements that add to the user experience. Ultimate Edition, for example, has extra tools such as GDM Maker and USplash Maker for users to create their own themes for the login and splash screens, and there's also a separate version specialised specifically for gamers with many titles pre- installed. The themes and the choice of installed applications (both free and non- free) are all considered in an effort to build 'the ultimate distro'. Then there's the other end of the scale. Mundus OS, for instance, bundles Alien to install non- Ubuntu packages and a bespoke solution to mount . Ubuntu ISO you can download from the community website. Whether you want to add some radical way to distribute new packages or just an interesting wallpaper, you can change things as much or as little as you want. And who knows - if people like what you're doing you could soon see your efforts could be on Distrowatch in the not- so- distant future.. Whatever your needs, there's an Ubuntu variant for you. SUSE Studio. Difficulty: easy; Time required: 3. Customisation: medium. Novell recently launched SUSE Studio, a service that enables you to create Open. SUSE respins from any browser. At the time we went to press this service was so exclusive it was strictly invite- only, though you could request an invitation via www. Even in beta this is a powerful, easy- to- use tool. The primary aim of the service is to enable you to generate virtual appliances using SUSE as a base for almost any purpose, but for our purposes we can also use it to create our own distro respin. From the outset there is a lot of potential to tailor your distro. You have a choice of which version of SUSE to use, and then you choose a base package that defines which desktop and hardware platform you're likely to be running your respin on. This could include choosing Gnome, KDE or LXDE as your desktop, or deciding that you're going to run it on a server. We recommend you choose Open. SUSE as your platform choice with this service as this tends to be more appropriate for home users, though you do have the option to choose SUSE Enterprise if you so wish. Further options allow you to define which software is included or rejected using a search tool towards the bottom of the page, and you can also add repositories and custom RPMs by simply clicking on the relevant link. In each case the interface works logically as a browser- based service and is surprisingly intuitive. ![]() Dual Boot linux/7 saving win. When you install a Linux. I had no trouble fixing the boot loader so that it would dual. do-I-reinstall-the-Windows-7-boot. External hard drives, USB flash drives, and multiple DVDs or CDs are all useful for this purpose. Have a Windows recovery CD/DVD available. Some computer manufacturers that pre- install Windows provide a Windows recovery/re- installation CD or DVD with the computer. However, many companies no longer ship a physical disc but instead create a hidden partition on the hard drive in which the recovery- disk information is stored. A utility is then usually provided which allows the user to burn a recovery/re- installation CD or DVD from it. If you are buying a new computer and intend on dual- booting, make sure you have (or can make) a physical Windows recovery/re- installation CD or DVD. If neither a CD/DVD nor a recovery partition/burning utility is provided by your computer manufacturer, you may need to contact your vendor and ask for a CD or DVD (to which you are normally entitled under the Windows EULA). You may need to request a physical recovery/re- installation CD or DVD directly from your computer manufacturer. See Windows. Recovery. Cd. Once you have created a physical backup disc from a restore- image partition on the hard- drive, the restore- image partition can either be removed or left in place. Ubuntu can be installed with it intact without problems. Install Ubuntu after Windows. A Windows OS should be installed first, because its bootloader is very particular and the installer tends to overwrite the entire hard drive, wiping out any data stored on it. If Windows isn't already installed, install it first. If you are able to partition the drive prior to installing Windows, leave space for Ubuntu during the initial partitioning process. Then you won't have to resize your NTFS partition to make room for Ubuntu later, saving a bit of time. When a Windows installation already occupies the entire hard drive, its partition needs to be shrunk, creating free space for the Ubuntu partition. You can do this during the Ubuntu installation procedure, or you can see How to Resize Windows Partitions for other options. If you have resized a Windows 7 or Vista partition and cannot boot up Windows, you can use the instructions from Windows. Recovery to fix it. Install Ubuntu. Download an Ubuntu Live. CD image (. iso) from Ubuntu Downloads and burn it to a disc (see Burning. Iso. Howto). Insert the Live. CD into your CD- ROM drive and reboot your PC. If the computer does not boot from the CD (e. Windows starts again instead), reboot and check your BIOS settings by pressing F2, F1. Delete, or ESC. Select "boot from CD". Proceed with installation until you are asked this question: "How do you want to partition the disk?". If you have already partitioned the disk and left space for Ubuntu, install it to that and then follow the rest of the steps. Otherwise, choose one of the next two steps. Automatic partition resizing (not recommended)Choose the first option, which should say "Install them side by side, choosing between them each startup". Specify the size of the new partition by dragging the slider at the bottom of the window. Click on "Forward". Continue on to Finishing Ubuntu Installation. Manual partitioning. Choose "Manually edit partition table". Listed will be your current partitions. Select the partition you want to resize and press Enter. Select "Size: ", press Enter. Select Yes, press Enter. Type in a new size in gigabytes for your partition, it's recommended you free up at least 1. GB of free space for your Ubuntu install. Press Enter when happy with your changes. It may take some time to apply the changes. Create a swap partition of at least your amount of RAM (if you don't know, 8. MB is a good value). Create a partition for your Ubuntu installation. Create other partitions if necessary: see Disk. Space. Select "Finish partitioning and write changes to disk". Master Boot Record and Boot Manager. GRUB2 is the boot manager installed in Ubuntu by default. GRUB2 is an open source boot manager that install the main parts of the boot loaders inside Ubuntu. This means Ubuntu is independent and avoids any need for writing to other operating systems. To accomplish this, the only thing in your computer outside of Ubuntu that needs to be changed is a small code in the MBR (Master Boot Record) of the first hard disk, or the EFI partition. The boot code is changed to point to the boot loader in Ubuntu. You will be presented with a list of operating systems and you can choose one to boot. If you do nothing the first option will boot after a ten second countdown. If you select Windows then GRUB or LILO will chain- load Windows for you at the Windows boot sector, which is the first sector of the Windows partition. Windows Vista no longer utilizes boot. Instead, Vista stores all data for its new boot manager in a boot folder. Windows Vista ships with an command line utility called bcdedit. You may want to read http: //go. Link. Id=1. 12. 15. Using a command line utility always has its learning curve, so a more productive and better job can be done with a free utility called Easy. BCD, developed and mastered during the times of Vista Beta. Easy. BCD is very user friendly and many Vista users highly recommend it. Installing Windows After Ubuntu. There are two different approaches: Recovering GRUB after reinstalling Windows. Please refer to the Reinstalling GRUB2 guide. Master Boot Record backup and replacement. This method does not work for computers with UEFI boot. In consequence, it won't work for pre- installed Windows 8 and some pre- installed with Windows 7. Phone 7 Headphones Don't Work on the Latest Mac. Book. Recently, a new staff member started at Lifehacker. She booted up her brand- new, company- issued Mac. Book Pro, and went to plug in her Ear. Pods to listen to some tunes while she worked. She was met with the same baffling conundrum as other Apple die- hards who rush to procure the latest release: Why the hell can’t you use the i. Phone 7’s Lightning connector headphones with the new Mac. Book Pro? Why Get Lightning Headphones in the First Place? First, some background. In 2. 01. 2, Apple introduced the smaller Lightning port on the i. Phone 5 replacing the 3. While the Lightning port necessitated a new charging cable, the Lightning connector was more compact than its predecessor and one could plug it into i. OS devices in either direction, making it more convenient. With the i. Phone 7, Apple made the “courageous” decision to force the use of its Lightning- compatible Ear. Pod headphones by removing the 3. In short, your 3. Ear. Pods that came with the phone, you bought a new pair of Lightning headphones, or you went wireless with Bluetooth- compatible headphones to listen to music. Using your old 3. Phone 7 is still possible, but requires the 3. Lightning adapter that comes included with the new i. Phone. That meant carrying around an extra, easy- to- lose little piece of equipment. It’s an example of Apple making design decisions that impact function for the sake of form, a decision the company’s made at many points in its past (for example, its decision to remove the optical drive in its 2. Macs). I admit, I get a wee bit frustrated when trying to remember which cord goes in which slot for all…Read more Removing the 3. By routing audio through the Lightning port, the phone can play higher quality, 2. Headphone manufacturers are also taking advantage of the fact that headphones can draw power from the i. Phone’s Lightning port, adding features like noise cancellation and interference- reducing DACs (digital- to- analog converters) to improve sound quality. But Lightning- only headphones only work on i. OS devices with Lightning ports. To listen to music on anything else, like your computer, or even an older i. Phone, you’ll need to tote around another pair of headphones. There Are No Functional Adapters Yet. Naturally, you might think there’s some sort of workaround, or an adapter that can easily fix this incompatibility issue. After all, Apple makes its own adapters for a variety of older interfaces (for instance, VGA port adapters for mirroring your i. OS device on a monitor). But unlike 3. 5mm headphones, which can be used with an i. Phone 7 via the Apple- made dongle, there’s no way to do the reverse and get Lightning headphones to work with anything that doesn’t have a Lightning port, making my colleague’s new Mac. Lightning- to- USB- C adapters only work when charging or transferring data. Which means no audio support, which means no Ear. Pod- powered desk concerts in your open- plan office. Apple Is Comfortable With User- Hostile Tech. Apple’s Lightning connector is convenient for Apple, but not so much for the rest of us. It’s only available on Apple’s i. OS devices, making switching to, say, an Android device an inconvenient and pricey decision—you’ll need new cables, headphones, docks etc. To play nice with others, Apple should have either left the 3. Phone, or switched to USB- C, which is what every other cell phone manufacturer is doing. And while their move towards incompatibility with other company’s devices isn’t surprising, it does seem a little weird that they’d build this kind of glaring incompatibility into their two most recent devices—the i. Phone 7 and the latest Mac. Book pro. The decision to exclude the Lightning port from its Macs—and not to publicly address the compatibility issues —also runs counter to its history of transition tools. During the company’s switch from Power. PC to Intel processors, it released the Rosetta translator software to keep Power. PC apps running on Intel- powered Macs. When the Mac. Book Air debuted without an optical drive, the company’s external Super. Drive optical drive eased the transition. My theory? The removal of the headphone jack and inclusion of Lightning Ear. Pods is simply a stop- gap to the company’s true goal of forcing you to go wireless and buy Air. Pods or Beats Bluetooth headphones. Considering the options, going wireless might be the answer, though I’d rather get some headphones that, you know, sound good. ![]() How to Look Sharp in the Summer and Still Beat the Heat. Fabrics are the most important aspect to consider when you want to look hawt when it’s hot. You want the fabrics you wear to be made of natural fibers, constructed with breathable weaves, and feel lightweight. Natural fibers wick away sweat and tend to dry faster; breathable weaves allow air to flow to your skin and cool you off; and lightweight materials keep you from being too insulated. No matter what you’re wearing, you’ll want it to be made of these fabrics: Cotton (poplin, seersucker, madras)Linen. You need to give your skin some breathing room by wearing looser clothing. Air flow is key. You don’t have to wear clothing that’s a size up or anything, just choose apparel that facilitates that much- needed air flow and doesn’t constrict. Skinny jeans, tights, and sweatpants are not a good idea. Dresses and skirts are a great option as well since they perfectly balance air flow and comfort. Even so, you’re better off with looser styles over fitted ones. That form- fitting black cocktail dress may look great on you, but it’s going to slowly cook you alive. Choose the Right Shoes. For men, Antonia Centeno at Real Men Real Style recommends loafers with holes (for the breathability), moccasins or boat shoes (because you can wear these without socks), or Italian leather shoes (since the leather is usually thinner than western- style leather shoes). Whatever you pick, let those puppies breathe as much as you can. For women, any open- toe dress shoe will do the trick, but flats with lightweight no- show socks (or no socks at all) work great too. It might be a bit warmer to do that, but the cotton will wick the sweat and keep your nice outer shirt from looking like a damp kitchen rag. HANDMADEJose Garcia Antonio, blind master potter from Mexico and one of his seductive clay mermaids, made onsite at the market. There are incredible markets around the world and then there is the International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe, New Mexico, an event that has been happening every July in Museum Hill since 2. Named the face of peace and the number one arts festival in the US by USA Today, this is the biggest global gathering of its kind. This year, 2. 5,0. The market starts with a parade of the artists welcomed by the city of Santa Fe as they gather in the main plaza welcomed by a Cuban live band. ![]() Li Edelkoort, the honorary chair for 2. Keith Recker, the creative director, read the names of each country and cried when Syria was called. This market is humanity, humanity at its core” said Li to an audience of culture bearers who blur borders with an eye- dazzling convergence of handmade forms, textures, and designs—textiles, jewelry, beadwork, basketry, wood carvings, ceramics, rugs, glass and metal work, sculpture, mixed media, toys, and more. In these turbulent times, it’s an amazing experience to be part of something based on beauty and respect. Face to face with artists from over 5. · · Music video by Rick Astley performing Never Gonna Give You Up. As one of the 1. 54 artists who participated this year said, “The market is everything that’s right with the world” affirmed Keith Recker, IFAA Creative Director and board member. Kavita Parmar from IOU Project was a first time participant in Innovation Inspiration, a special exhibition area featuring works by 3. I have had the opportunity as a designer to present my work in many shows and fairs around the globe including fashion capitals like Paris, New York, Florence, Milan etc. I have never encountered such a strong sense of community and an incredibly beautiful empathy within the artisans, the clients and the many staff and volunteers of the IFAA. The client response I have had even after coming back from the show has reinforced my belief that the customer is looking for authenticity and a direct dialogue with the craftsperson and this is one of the answers to the future of a true luxury shopping experience. Carla Fernandez, from Mexico and also a first time participant, said that she was very surprised to encounter a spiritual experience sort of a boot camp of the positive, the possible and the future where sharing is the currency. She has been to many shows around the world just selling her products but this is the only time where she has felt a real support, a real sense of community. The show reaffirmed her belief that the future is handmade, that this is a possible and relevant future that can be a sustainable thriving business. She also said she encountered the real America, one that favors diversity and culture and a very different one from the one in the news. Porfirio Gutierrez from Oaxaca who participated in 2. To be accepted means to receive a special recognition and be the beneficiary of all the knowledge and care by a pull of top specialists in different areas such as branding, entrepreneurship, marketing etc. Porfirio was very proud to be chosen as a mentor this year, helping first time artisans to get around. Somporn Intaraprayong from Thailand, represented by Chinalai, has participated 8 times at the market. Her booth is the first stop of any serious textile collector and one of the first to sell out. This year she was invited as a panelist where she spoke from the heart about her community of seamstresses and sewers who use stitches to tell stories of the rice fields and their daily lives. She includes everyone who needs and wants to work, they all have a chance and get the most important teaching of all: there is also beauty in imperfection, beauty in every process, beauty in every stitch. Olga Reiche from Guatemala has been to the market 8 times representing pik’bil textiles from the Queckchi ethnic group of Coban. These lace type textiles were nearly extinct with all the Chinese imports. Olga, the daughter of a German and an indigenous woman from Coban, remembers visiting her grandmother and being mesmerized by her silver jewelry and intricate white lace dress made using one thread hand spun cotton, back strap loom and white on white. Eight years ago, Olga saw the market as the perfect place to present to the world this technique and to use this as an “excuse” to rescue the knowledge and convince the artisans that there is a market that appreciates their heritage. I have the highest respect for the show, I know I will be surrounded by the best of the best, all chosen carefully according to principles of ethics, respect, tradition, heritage and culture. There is no place in the world where artisans are respected and honored like in Santa Fe”. Olga travels to the market with Amalia Gue, a weaver from a remote village who at 3. ![]() Olga’s. Fe Francis is the name of Amalia’s baby, named after the patron of the city and the market. Indeed, this is not a market, this is a miracle, as one of the slogans claims. The Santa Fe Folk Art Market is a community of ideals around sustainability, entrepreneurship, empowerment, diversity, well being and cultural preservation. Artists go home with 9. This impact is especially great for disenfranchised women and artists from developing countries, where artisan work is second only to agriculture and daily income averages less than $3. For both consumers and artists, the most positive path to the future is handmade.” Affirms Keith Recker. Seeing these cultural treasures and meeting the artists creates a connectivity that stirs the heart, opens the mind, and invites us to speak a single language,” says Judith Espinar, a co- founder of the Market.
